Moorpark Takes Controversy Over Lighting for Golf Driving Range To Ventura County Supervisors

Posted on Friday, September 9, 2011 3:35pm

Ventura County Supervisors are now being asked to weigh in on a controversy over lighting for a golf driving range in the Tierra Rejada Valley, between Moorpark and Simi Valley.

Owners of the Tom Barber Golf Center had gone to the Ventura County Planning Commission, seeking a 20 year extension on an operating permit set to expire in 2017.  The issue became controversial because some people, including nearby property owners objected to the lights used at the facility at night.  After a marathon hearing, with dozens of speakers, the Commission approved the permit extension, finding that the lighting wasn’t a public nuisance.  At the same time, the range’s owner agreed to shut down some light poles, replace glare causing bulbs on others, and shorten hours during quieter winter months.

It wasn’t enough for the Moorpark City Council, though, which moved to appeal the Commission’s decision to County Supervisors, who will have the final say on the issue.
