Widespread Computer Hacking Uncovered

Posted on Thursday, August 4, 2011 10:40am

A new report by the computer security company McAfee says it has found proof that dozens of high-profile computer networks have been hacked since 2006.

Toralv Dirro was one of the researchers who went through massive amounts of data collected on a server that logged the attacks. He says whoever was behind the attacks used email viruses to gain access to the information held by companies, governments and even non-profit organizations. According to Dirro, “this attack, as big as it is, it really is like not even the tip of the iceberg. It’s like the snow coating on the tip of the iceberg.”

McAfee says one northern California county, a southern California county, several U.S. government agencies, and an International Olympic Committee were hacked, but McAfee would not release any further details for fear of inviting future attacks.
