Proposal For Closing Post Offices Includes One On South Coast

Posted on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 4:26pm

The U.S. Postal Serives has announced it’s considering closing about 3700 of its 32,000 retail locations around the country, including one in Santa Barbara County, as part of its efforts to get operations out of the red.

The list of possible closures released by the Postal Services include the Victoria Court Post Office, in downtown Santa Barbara.  Postal Service officials say they are increasingly using what they call expanded access locations, like grocery and drug stores.

The Postal Services doesn’t get tax dollars for operating expenses, and lost more than eight billion dollars during the last fiscal year.  Officials say they are proposing to close low volume locations, with the first closures set to take place in four to six months. The cuts could save an estimated $200 million dollars a year.
