Grants Support Monitoring Program For New Marine Protected Areas Off Santa Barbara, Ventura County Coastlines

Posted on Friday, July 22, 2011 10:34am

A four million dollar grant is going to help fund the monitoring of newly created marine protected areas along the Southern California coastline, including parts of Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties.

The California Ocean Protection Council is supporting four monitoring projects, including three based at U. C. Santa Barbara.  Researchers at UCSB’s Marine Science Institute will look at things like sandy beach, and surf zone ecosystems, as well as issues like commercial, and recreational impacts of the zones.

The new protected areas extend from Point Conception, to the Mexican border.
