Ventura Police say the city has had a nearly 200% increase in auto break-ins, and thefts during the last week, with 35 separate incidents. Police think there may be an organized operation hitting neighborhoods.
Investigators say in about half the cases, the thieves stole things like laptops and cell phones from unlocked vehicles, and in the other half, they smashed out windows. Most of the crimes occurred in Ventura’s Harbor/Pierpont area, downtown, and midtown areas. Police have stepped up patrols, but are also asking the public to to alert for people who look like they might be scoping out vehicles for potential break-ins.
