Oxnard Pushes Back Vote On New General Plan Until September

Posted on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 6:22pm

The City of Oxnard postponed action on a new general plan, which would serve as a blueprint for growth in the city for the next two decades.

The City Council had been expected to make a final decision on what’s known as the 2030 General Plan Tuesday night.

The vote was put off because of concerns from the Oxnard School District.  The district wants the plans to include an option for a new school campus in the Doris Road area, near Oxnard Airport.  Planners had taken out that option because of concerns the Airport District might sue to prevent a new school in the area, because of safety concerns.  But, the district also threatened legal action.  State law could allow it build the school anyway, over city objections.

Planners wanted time to see if a settlement can be reached.

The plan also continued to draw protests from dozens of people over the designation of some land near Ormond Beach for potential future industrial development.
