Governor Appeals FEMA Rejection Of Federal Disaster Declaration For California Counties

Posted on Friday, July 15, 2011 12:00pm

The Governor is appealing a decision by FEMA to deny the state’s request for a federal disaster declaration for Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties, as well as 18 other California counties impacted by last March’s big storms.

The Governor set a letter to the President this week saying that FEMA used the wrong criteria in denying federal aid.  FEMA said that the damage didn’t meet the criteria because it was the result of three seperate storms.  However, Brown says the National Weather Service, and the State Department of Water Resources determined the storms were all related to one low pressure system, and did meet the criteria.

Brown says the state suffered more than 50 million dollars in damage.  A federal disaster declaration clears the way for federal assistance, and statewide hazard mitigation grant program funding.
