Santa Barbara County Closes In On Supervisorial Redistricting Plan

Posted on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 9:34am

Santa Barbara County Supervisors have given conceptual approval to a supervisorial redistricting plan which would make mostly minor changes in districts to reflect the population changes shown in the 2010 census.  It would expand District One by about 5,000 people, and reduce District Five by about 15,000 to reflect growth.  Lompoc would be split, and Isla Vista and U.C. Santa Barbara would remain in District Three.  The plan would split the county’s population of just under 424,000 people into five districts with just under 85,000 residents each, keeping the districts within 1.4% of each other in size.  The board looked at 16 proposed maps submitted by the public before narrowing it down to the one it is pursuing.  Supervisors could finalize the plan at their August 2nd meeting.
