Man Sentenced To 66 Years in Prison For Series Of Robberies Commits Suicide In Ventura County Jail Facility

Posted on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 3:44pm

A Ventura County man sentenced to more than six decades in prison for a string of robberies was founded dead in his county jail cell early Wednesday morning, with authorities saying he apparently hung himself.

Peter Zepeda  was found guilty of nine counts of robbery, and last week was sentenced to 66 years in state prison.  The 31-year-old man wore disguises in his robberies, including a Santa beard.  He robbed drug stores, and a supermarket. During sentencing, a judge noted factors in the sentence included prior convictions, the fact Zepeda was armed, and in some cases people thought they were going to die.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department says Zepeda had undergone a psychiatric evaluation after his sentencing, and had been cleared for housing in a normal cell at the county’s Todd Road Jail Facility.
