Two National Guard planes based at from Naval Base Ventura County, along with 35 crew members have been deployed to Arizona to help with efforts to control the largest wildfire in that state’s history. The planes are from the Channel Islands Air National Guard Base at Point Mugu.
The C-130 transports have been outfitted with modular firefighting equipment which allows them to discharge up to 3,000 gallons of fire retardant, or water at a time. The 146th Airlift Wing is being deployed for firefighting for the second time this year. Planes, and members of the unit helped fight fires in Texas earlier this spring.
