Ventura County Grand Jury questions use of park rangers

Posted on Friday, May 27, 2011 7:10am

The Ventura County Grand Jury is calling on the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District to disband the ranger unit it uses to police its 47 parks, and other facilities, and instead contract with other law enforcement agencies, like Simi Valley Police.  The report says the limited staff is unable to adequately patrol all of the sites, and that police, or Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies are often already the first to respond during emergencies anyway.

The report also questions the use of armed, certified officers for duites like opening locked gates, or providing educational programs.
