Whooping Cough Boosters Required

Posted on Monday, May 9, 2011 6:26am

All California seventh through twelfth graders will have to get a Pertussis…or Whooping Cough booster shot before they return to school in the fall, unless the student can show he or she has had a booster shot since turning seven.

2010 was the worst year for Whooping cough since 1947 and a new state law requires middle and high school students to be immunized. Sacramento County Health Officer Glennah Trochet says many parents may think their child has already been immunized but that may not be the case. Trochet says, “the tetanus booster almost always includes the diphtheria booster, too.   But, unless you specifically request or unless your doctor specifically tells you that you’re also getting the Pertussis, the whooping cough booster?”  You’re probably not.

The California Department of Public Health says all children under the age of 18 are at risk, but that Hispanics infants under the age of six months are particularly susceptible.
