The president of the University of California says his system can cope with the budget cuts approved by the legislature earlier this year – but any more cuts would be a disaster.
U-C regents have previously approved an eight percent student fee increase this fall. Mark Yudof says there won’t be any additional fee increases in 2012 as long as state funding remains where it is now.
Yudof says, “if we are reduced another $500 million, all bets are off. We probably will need a January increase, we’ll look at larger increases, we’ll look at more program closings, more layoffs and all the rest.”
Governor Jerry Brown and legislative Democrats have said the U-C’s would have to take that additional half-billion-dollar hit unless voters agree to extend several tax increases.
Yudof appeared Friday before State Senators at a budget committee hearing in Silicon Valley.
